The Asiatic Society was instrumental in setting up different learned institutions and professional bodies in the country including Archaeological Survey of India, Geological Survey of India, Zoological Survey of India, Botanical Survey of India, Indian Museum, School of Tropical Medicine, University of Calcutta and Indian Science Congress Association as well as Indian National Science Academy and so on.

In recognition of the Society’s importance and its immense contribution in all fields of arts and sciences, Government of India recognized the Asiatic Society as an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament during its bi-centenary year in 1984. With the enactment of the Asiatic Society Act of 1984, the Government of India took over the responsibility of providing the required financial support for its maintenance and development in future. At present, the Society is an Autonomous Organization under Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
